SCOTIABANK THEATRE: CULTURED KING WEST MULTIPLEX

Scotiabank Theatre

259 Richmond Street West

Movie Theatre

In the heart of Toronto’s Entertainment District, the Scotiabank Theatre, located at 259 Richmond Street West, is the best spot in the King West neighbourhood to catch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. But, there is more to this movie theatre than the current crop of big, mainstream films.

The spacious, circular lobby, with its faux outer space elements and futuristic vibe, welcomes movie goers. Colourful sphere patterns on the floor, plus green, purple and silver swirls on the ceiling with large models of the Starship Enterprise and a Klingon Bird of Prey hanging high above, make up a fun atmosphere. The silver bank of eight self-serve ticket booths are perfect additions to the space-age feel while ensuring ticket lines move quickly.

At the top of a very long escalator are fourteen auditoriums, including one IMAX theatre. The theatres range from 250 to 500 seats, and can be rented for various purposes. From private and preview movie screenings to corporate meetings, product launches or a place of worship for faith-based groups, the auditoriums are versatile.

The bright concession stands, accented with neon signage and lighting, provide the standard movie fare of popcorn and sugary drinks plus the usual selection of candy. The arcade is the kid-friendly spot to while away some time, but Vivid is the highlight. A small bar located near the expansive windows and featuring two flat screen televisions, this is the perfect nook to grab a pre-film cocktail and catch up on the latest sports scores.

In addition to the usual line-up of new releases, the Scotiabank Theatre is one of several Cineplex locations to host the Classic Film Series. For the nostalgic filmgoer, classics such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Casablanca, Citizen Kane and A Streetcar Named Desire are screened for only $5. Every month a different feature runs twice and the ticket price is fantastic value to catch an old film you may never see on the big screen otherwise.

Not in the mood for a movie but fancy a night out that’s not too fancy? How about catching a WWE pay-per-view event or the Bolshoi Ballet in the comfort of a movie theatre? Front Row Centre Events by Cineplex present live and encore performances of international productions. Scotiabank Theatre is the spot to watch the latest Metropolitan Opera such as La Traviata or Wagner’s The Ring or a National Theatre production like Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein. Prices do vary by event so check www.cineplex.com/events for full schedules and admission.

So next time you feel like a flick in the King West neighbourhood, why not watch something a little different at the John and Richmond multiplex. And though there are no specific sites for the Scotiabank Theatre, you can like Cineplex at www.facebook.com/Cineplex or follow at www.twitter.com/cineplexmovies.
