One of a Kind Show: Funky Finds

Direct Energy Centre

100 Princes' Blvd

Exhibit Hall

From dazzling jewelry to quilted tea cozies, the unique selection of products did not disappoint the thousands of shoppers who attended Toronto’s One of a Kind Show. The annual spring five-day shopping extravaganza featured the creative designs of 450 artists and artisans from across Canada.

Conveniently located in the Direct Energy Centre, the semi-annual event (the Christmas Show takes place in December) is a big draw for King West urban dwellers whose close proximity to the centre means they can grab a java and scoot over for a couple of hours of design inspiration.

Whether it’s a funky piece of art to add pizzazz to a drab wall, or gorgeous purse to brighten up an outfit, these Toronto artists at the One of a Kind Show offered some truly unique finds.

One such vendor was Hoi-An Tang, who designs fun, yet edgy, pictures, cards, and jewelry for her company Mehoi. From bacon shaped ear studs to prints featuring pigtailed girls with attitude, her offerings are bound to elicit reactions, and may become increasingly sighted among the trendy King West neigbourhood as we more learn of her offerings.

An innovative product by Montreal makers, Oopsmark is perfect for the Toronto cyclist who wants to pick up a bottle of vino before heading home to make dinner. Not yet available in stores yet, chances are likely that it will soon be seen in a Toronto boutique (or on bicycles) near you.

For those seeking something a bit more serene, Studio Robert Wu showcased beautiful paintings created through the ancient art form of marbling alongside intricately designed boxes. A Toronto artist, whose work is sold online and at Paper Place on Queen Street, he is a hand bookbinder, box maker, gilder, and marbler, whose work is truly one-of-a-kind.

Brightly coloured bags and purses were the focus at Magz-Bagz. Fun, bright, and unique, this booth was abuzz with activity. The show was a huge success and, as always, Toronto looks forward to its return in another seven months.
