KING WEST ICE CREAM at COOL HAND LUC

By on

Cool Hand Luc

545 King Street West

Icecream Bar & Eatery

Down a couple of steps at 545 King Street West is nestled Cool Hand Luc, a small but wondrous place where all your dreams come true. Well, not literally, but it comes close. This little Toronto spot, offering a selection of fresh soups, grilled cheese sandwiches, and Kawartha Dairy ice cream cones, has happy turquoise walls including a whimsical Willy Wonka-like mural of bright cartoon characters made of sweets and candies frolicking in an ice cream landscape.

While Cool Hand Luc’s menu consists of three categories (four if you count the milkshakes), plus specials, the number of options is decent. A Basic Grilled Cheese ($3.50) allows you to pick your bread – white or multigrain – and cheese – cheddar, mozzarella or jalapeno cheddar, while a Deluxe Grilled Cheese ($5.00) includes two toppings from the veggie or meat selection. A Basic Combo for $7.50 or the $9.50 Deluxe Combo includes a soup or scoop plus a pop or water.

Choosing an ice cream flavour at this King Blue ice cream shop can be difficult, but helpful Jocelyn behind the counter offers samples of the most popular. Top seller Peanut Butter Chocolate is to die for and the Black Raspberry Thunder with bits of white chocolate is delectable. A couple of gelatos and a few sorbets, including two sugar-free, gluten-free and dairy-free flavours, Coconut and the delightfully tart Passion Fruit, round out the variety. Feel free to indulge in dessert first and enjoy your scoop while waiting for your grilled cheese.

Opened by Luc Essiambre in June of last year, the King West ice cream shop is a favourite in the community and a great spot for any season and anytime of the day. The hot and hearty, but not spicy, Chili is great comfort food for the cooler weather. Cool Hand Lucs Menu - King Blue

Open at 11:00 a.m. every day, Cool Hand Luc closes at midnight Sunday to Thursday, and 3:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The joint sees its share of the neighbourhood’s nine to five crowd during weekday lunches, while the stylish King West club hoppers frequent the ice cream spot once the bars close.

Who needs street meat when specials like the Mac and Cheese Grilled Cheese or Smorewich await you at 3 a.m? And yes, the Mac and Cheese sandwich consists of macaroni and cheese with a slice of cheese in between two slices of bread, then grilled. It’s the perfect cure for soaking up those King West cocktails.
